At Kelley and Gardner Orthodontics, we understand that while orthodontic treatment can lead to a beautiful, healthy smile, it may occasionally present unexpected challenges. Orthodontic emergencies, though rare, can happen. Knowing how to manage them can help you stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track. Here’s a guide on how to avoid orthodontic emergencies and what to do if you experience one.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

An orthodontic emergency typically involves a loose or broken brace or wire that is poking and causing discomfort. It’s important to note that a broken appliance that isn’t causing discomfort can usually wait until normal business hours to be repaired. If you experience an emergency, call our office immediately at (843) 856-9323 so we can schedule a time to see you.

Preventive Tips

  • Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods: Foods like nuts, popcorn, hard candy, and gum can damage your braces and wires. Stick to softer foods and cut hard fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces.
  • Wear a Mouthguard: If you play sports, wearing a mouthguard can protect your teeth and orthodontic appliances from injury.
  • Follow Instructions: Adhering to our guidelines on eating, oral hygiene, and wearing rubber bands can help prevent many common issues.

Managing Common Problems at Home

Sometimes, you can fix minor issues at home until you can visit our office. Here’s how:

  • Wire Irritation: If a wire is poking and causing discomfort, place orthodontic wax over the part of the appliance that’s bothering you. If wax doesn’t help, try clipping the wire with sterile nail clippers or scissors. Call our office to schedule a repair appointment.
  • Small Spaces Developing Between Teeth: Don’t worry if you notice small spaces developing between your teeth. This is usually normal and expected as your teeth move into their new positions, particularly in the early stages of treatment. We’ll ensure these spaces close as your treatment progresses.
  • Loosening of Teeth: It’s normal for teeth to feel loose during treatment. They must loosen first so they can move into the correct positions. Over time, they will become securely fixed in their new spots.
  • If a Separator Comes Out: Separators are used to create space for bands. If one falls out, contact our office, and we’ll advise if you need an appointment to have a new separator placed.
  • If a Bracket Comes Loose: Call our office to schedule a repair visit. Broken appliances will delay treatment time and need to be repaired promptly.
  • Importance of Rubber Bands: Wearing rubber bands as instructed is crucial to staying on track with your treatment. If you forget how to wear them, please call the office for over-the-phone instructions.

Trauma to the Mouth

Contact your dentist immediately if you suffer trauma to your mouth. After seeing your family dentist, please call our office so we can address any dislodged or displaced teeth or damage to your orthodontic appliances. If you can’t reach your family dentist, call us, and we’ll assist you with the injury.

Lost or Broken Invisalign Aligner

It’s vital to continue wearing an Invisalign aligner if you lose or break your current one. Usually, the best option is to move to the next scheduled aligner. If you don’t have any additional aligners, wear your previous one and call the office to decide the next steps. Wearing something is crucial to prevent your teeth from moving and extending your treatment time.
